  • TLF: "Marie of Hamburg [1]. This coaster type vessel, known as a tjalk, and her two masted cousin, the kuff-tjalk, are the most popular craft from the Netherlands to the Baltic. Side view of Marie [2]. Most tjalks nowadays are auxiliaries but she was purely sail, with the wheelhouse as her only modern concession. Few wooden tjalks remain, but the type has been found so satisfactory that modern ship builders still follow the ancient lines in steel contruction." [The Rudder, October 1948]
