Re. the illustration on lower right: TLF: "A Finnish schooner in a broad reach, going home with an empty hold. This sketch shows the advantage of the standing gaff rig, typical of Finnish fore and afters. The brailed-in head of the mainsail, counterbalanced by the furled outer jib, effectively shortens the sail area. When necessary the mainsail can quickly be hauled out by one man. As the schooners hardly ever carry more than two men and a boy, reefing is resorted to only in an emergency." [The Rudder, February 1948]
