  • [Bauhaus stage Dessau, conceived and directed by Oskar Schlemmer. On 16 March 1927, addressing an audience of the 'Circle of the Friends of the Bauhaus', and following Oskar Schlemmer's related lecture, the Bauhaus stage performs its Demonstration of systematical Exploration of the formal Elements for stage production, a program of different scenes dealing with dance, staging and the figure in space [cf. 209, 219]
This photograph shows the dancers "Scheper and Siedhoff and figures from the 2nd version of the Figural Cabinet" [209, p. 258], as well as a scene "From a pantomime with figures and transparent walls*" [219, p. 3], a.k.a. Figural Cabinet.]

Schlemmer: "... since we have no interest in make-believe forests, mountains, lakes or rooms - we have constructed simple flats of wood and white canvas that can be slid back and forth on a series of parallel tracks and can be used as screens for light projection. ... we can also make them into translucent curtains or wall areas and thereby achieve an illusion of a higher order. ... we let the light function by itself, for what it is ... Let us rather open our eyes and expore our minds to the pure power of color and light."* [219, p. 3]

TLF: "Two dancers (Lou Scheper and Werner Siedhoff) and three flat figurines from Schlemmer's "Figural Cabinet"* ... [photos] were taken under Oskar Schlemmer's direction" [211]
