As an oil painter, there’s something about the way Samuel Bak’s brush strokes interact with the textures he is creating in the piece Infinity, Suggested that keeps my eyes bouncing around from one edge of the canvas to the next. He allows the canvas’ texture to shine through in some areas, making those in which the paint sinks into the grooves of the canvas and smooths them out more intriguing. The physicality of the way the paint is tacked onto the surface is fascinating, it creates a dimension that not a lot of painters achieve because of the precious nature of the material in which they are working with. The tea pot’s spout is also made round and shiny through the conciseness of the highlights which Bak has placed around the rim and on the spout itself.
Bak also manages to make the tea pot look like a fleshy pear, as he follows the same color scheme that he uses with the actual fruits featured in the painting. The slightly olive green mixes in with the soft white color of the interior of the peach, which is reflected in the teapot. The giant pear that lays hidden behind the plank of wood has an eerie and human-like handling to that makes me question the meaning behind where it is and what it’s doing. The repetition of the pear, in both shape and color, unifies the piece into a cohesive narrative that while I’m not quite sure it’s exact meaning, makes me just want to sit in front of it and figure the story out.
