Manet's painting Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe (1863) comes to mind. The miniature still life gathering in the foreground of the teapot, cup and saucer and pear are presented whole. No fractures or severed parts. And in the midst of a strange landscape dominated by the monumental Tea pot.
It is made of stone and then the stone is plastered over. The foreground still-life reflects a civilization of order and calm. As an aside, the handle of the pitcher reminds me of the bent silver spoon that appeared in the painting that Bak found on the easel of an artist of the Vilna Ghetto who had been deported and killed.
Is it any different today as Putin directs missiles and rockets into civilian inhabited areas to what end?
