When is a tree not a tree but a prop in the world of Bak. It can represent birth or rebirth, hope and a repository for his collection of objects.
The blue pitcher, the pear, even the envelope. The latter is mysterious as we try to guess if there is a note in the envelope and if so, what does it say.
This tree is surrounded by other friends e.g. pear, cup on its side and the wooden silhouette of a pear. A broken branch goes out of the cup and is broken. The negative spaces created by the broken branch allow the sky to come through.
This assemblage is situated on a cloth and table. It becomes an offering of sorts.
A constant reminder that a contemporary still life is certainly not still. Our world is constantly in disarray and Bak’s art is a visual reminder of where we are today.
