  • How are we seen? How do we see? When we began these Bak a Day mailings the intention was to help each of us look and SEE. As our world continues to be constantly distracted by atrocities and what is call "news", we are less able to truly see and integrate what we see. Bak’s work provides a remarkable challenge to hone our ability to see.

Two "death" masks frame a portrait of an open-eyed face. Both masks are sightless. The dark glasses worn by a blind man are available as the open-eyed figure looks on.

Who is truly seeing? Are the masks looking inward ? To see and to understand what is seen.

We all need to learn how to look and to see, not only those who are closest to us and those who are in harm’s way. How do we attend to the injustices of our community and world? How do we focus on Good News? On deeds of lovingness? On Ma'asim Tovim, good deeds?

Once we are able to focus and see, we must assume the obligation to act.

    As seen?
Each of faces have blinded eyes and a pair of dark glasses providing added evidence of Blindness.

Even those of us who have sight are often blind to so much around us.
I am reading Robert E. Lee and Me.
The author grew up in the South and aspired to be a “White Southern Gentleman”, he was truly blind to the oppression and murder surrounding him.

Bak’s ability to present a painful reality that is almost more than real.
We all have blind spots in our relationships and commitments.

Will this art alert us to be more wide eyed and open to needs of others around us?
How to be emotionally present and available?
