"The pear symbolizes for me the fruit of paradise, the fruit of knowledge, it is a metaphor of how we perceive the world. In my painting the huge pear was destroyed by bombs; it emanates clouds of smoke. It is an image of the loss of paradise and the discovery of war, a real hell on earth! A second pear seems to be more or less intact. But if you look at it closely, also this one is destroyed. This is the case of the survivor. If you look at a survivor from the outside he looks like an ordinary person, but his inside is full of cracks."
