Indeed a Display as the members of one side of the Chess match is well presented.
They have endured!
Clearly Sam's use of Chess as a metaphor is on Display with this intense and colorful painting.
From the left the pieces are arranged:
Rook
Knight
Bishop
Queen
King
With a landscape littered with pawns.
As ever in battle, the pawns are the casualties.
All are presented before the fragments of the Chess board.
On the right is the sole Rook and a marvelous winged pawn which presents flight and possibly escape.
The farm house in the background seems to just be a farm house.
Finally, the tree or trees on the right have new growth and a sense of continuation.
Overall, a brilliantly colored Display of Sam at his best!
