  • TLF: "my eye fell on a big anaconda tightly coiled around a dead tree. ... The sunshine shining into the cage created the rainbow effect [on its glass walls]. The richly saturated colors of the big snake – olive green, golden ochre on the belly, and spotted with large, circular black markings – reflected the blue sky here and there. Altogether an effect easier painted than described. In my case, I painted forthwith what I had seen, helped by a few sketches; but as a painter’s experience, it had been an eye-opening occasion and its influence on my further progress was never forgotten again. ... [In] a grand showing of “herpetological cubism”..., this Anaconda will be an important work on it." [105]
