Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale), Inv. Nr. MOI02375
Provenance: 1998 acquired by the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg

  • TLF: "Quimper: The blue bay of Douarnenez… These eyes of mine have beheld some of the last commercial square-riggers making a living, in the form of the topsail schooners of the region… Curiously only one painting of mine has this scenery for a theme. The Café de la Marine of 1931 is based on a sketch I made of a building across the river Odet seen every morning when we emerged from our hotel after breakfast; all the rest in the composition is of my invention. I see in the picture considerable influence on me of my recent studies in theatre design. … This is a good example of my interweaving a fantastic reality with a realistic fantasy: the Live and the Dead."
