TLF: "one of my most detailed ... compositions, in intention akin to a Votive painting dedicated to the memory of ships and sailors that never arrived. “Cottica” ... had its origin in a news item, according to which the wartime demand for shipping tonnage was so urgent that even sailing ships were once again employable. What with the new invention of aerial strikes added to the lurking submarine, the toll to be anticipated of shipping and human life could be too readily imagined." [105]
