  • TLF: "I arrived at my new [US-Army Camp Ritchie, Maryland,] in the fall of 1942. There ... I penned a brief “artist’s note” to accompany my painting of The Fast Steamer Gardenia reproduced in the catalogue of the Museum of Modern Art exhibition American Realists and Magic Realists. I thank my inclusion in this monumental show to the ... efforts of Lincoln Kirstein; it came as a wonderful surprise and came near to wrecking my valued state of psychic anesthesia. My pictures shared the room with Andrew Wyeth." [105]
