  • TLF: "A memory image [...] of this splendid team hauling a furniture van of the international moving firm of Gustav Knauer. I saw this in Paris in 1933 on the Avenue Victor-Hugo and painted my picture of the sight in New York five years later. The moving of the Feininger family from Zehlendorf to Weimar in 1919 was made in just such vehicles (there were two) and I vividly recall the excitement of seeing them arrive at the house at 16, Gutenbergstrasse." [103, Vol. IV]

TLF: "[A commemoration also of] The moving vans conveying the family furniture [to Weimar in 1919], so gaily decorated with huge lettering in yellow, blue and red, hauled by teams of three and four horses... Within five years the streets through which this caravan made its festive progression would be resounding to the cries of the multitude hailing Hitler and his brown-shirted bodyguard..." [105]
