TLF: "In my youth, going to school in Germany, we all experienced at school a queer contradiction between no change at all and excessive change due due to political changes, in school administration. For example, the German Revolution of 1918 seemed to make no impression on our schools until 1923, whwn local elections in the State of Thuringia went “left” for a brief period; a drastic change was then ordered in the curriculum. But the main body of teachers was not changed. I remember one little man coming in. to teach art. This, at a “classical” Humanistic Gymnasium, was a mere nobody. He disappeared, when the Leftist Regime gave way to the Nationalists in 1924. But I am happy to say, that Laurence and I also disappeared from the that ghastly school in that year, to go to the wonderful Hellerau Boarding School which, unluckily, ceased to operate the year after. […] I love the memory of it. This Spring I found an old Class photograph of my clas in 1924; I painted a very nice picture with the photograph as a base; a real act of piety. [103, letter to D.
