TLF: "There was Jacques, and his friend Marthe [friends from Paris] – a pair of lovers over whom an enchantment seemed to hover, paralysing any effort to do something with themselves except love, quarrel and make up; there was Jacques’ mother, married to Dr. Wolfsohn, a man of Roman integrity and very intelligent, but blinded by his communism into believing Hitler’s professions of peaceful intentions, maintaining that it was only the wicked bourgeois arms industry that preached resistance. [105]

"The Sitzkrieg (Phoney War) was on, and my friend Jacques Germain, doing military service in the French army and who had been close to his release when the war began, was captured and spent the next five years in a PW camp, as I heard from this friend Marthe." [105]
