[To take this picture Feininger had to lean over the balcony railing while peering into the viewfinder of his camera, held at waist level. His awkward maneuver, recorded in the shadow below, was more than repaid by the surprising result, which is similar to the startling camera pyrotechnics of Russian filmmakers Dziga Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein, whose films greatly impressed Feininger at the time.]
