TLF: "Land of Promise", 1939 [101]; "Land of Promise", 1939 New York [102, Nr. 10]
Whereabouts not known
Provenance: 1939 studio sale to Mr. Eric Schroeder, Cambridge, MA
TLF: "The first painting begun and finished, after the “New Deal” between the Dark Powers and my civic self, was the Land of Promise ... The mood of the picture is serene, the name of it purposely ambivalent... I was not at all certain that I should be able to do anything. - After I had begun to see that, apparently, it would work and that, therefore, I was becoming myself again, I was shaken by a silent burst of gratitude to whatever Deity, and wept with emotion – then went on working."
