TLF 1993: "... The environment out of which this self-portrait grew is, of course, life at the Bauhaus plus the exuberance of being fully seventeen years old, at which age (in 1927) I made this image. Beyond my love of Chaplin the get-up is a little remarkable inasmuch as it is but one of quite a few photographic self-portraits in some form or other of disguise that I took of myself. I had not oberseved this feature of early times (in two such auto-portraits I am wearing masks of my own making) until today when getting ready to write to you..." [204, Letter to the LACMA/T.B. Wride]
