Inscr. lower right: L.; verso over the entirely painted canvas centered on a white field: T. LUX F. 1959 Tete de la Dame à la Daboie
TLF: "Tête de la Dame à la Daboie", 1959 [101]
Private collection Germany
Provenance: Around 2006 ACME Fine Art, Boston, MA, sold to Martha Richardson Fine Art, Boston, MA; 2007 sold
TLF: "This picture was begun as a much larger canvas, with a figure of half-length. It is pure invention, without any reference to a model. - ...If I explain the term of 'daboie' it will reinforce the duality of the intended effect. This word is the French version of the Indian term of 'daboia', which designates a very beautiful and equally poisonous viper in Asia. The daboia never appeared in this painting. But I hope to paint a picture of the Daboia, probably without the 'Dame', before too long..." [104, Schäfer/Witteveen, December 08, 2007]
