  • TLF: "...this was my first public appearance with a painting, 1930, Annual Exhibition by Das Kunstblatt (Paul Westheim), group show in Reckendorf Haus..." [102, Nr. 58]

TLF: "Painting was my salvation. My large canvas “Einfahrt von Havanna” dates from this time... Three males...: a gaucho type..., a lanky, tall bluejacket with gleaming tarpaulin hat (I made such a hat for myself around that time for a costume dance at the school, and painted my self-portrait wearing the hat) and an admiral...(a father figure). The solitary female, as her clothes proclaim, represents my inarmorata, complete with beret basque and mahogany locks. Everything in the composition is in motion!" [105]

Paul Westheim, Das Kunstblatt, December 1930, p. 358-369: "...The happenings in Theodor Lux's unusual paintings are astonishing. This 20-year-old from Dessau - he was born in 1910 - surprises with his awareness of surface tectonics. The nuance of the colors, the idiosyncratic silhouette of the figures, the ingenious play of straight lines and angles of these sailboats is determined entirely by the surface rhythm. In the "Entrance to Havana", one might think of popular English color engravings, in the "Pirate Ship" the color scheme may still seem a little too gaudy, too colorful; but it is unmistakable that these compositions come from a young man who has the ability to paint in his blood and who also seems to have the desire to develop his own style."*
