TLF: "The Passage", 1957 [101]; "The Passage", 1957 Cambridge [102, Nr. 273]
Private collection USA
Provenance: 1988 sold from the exhibition at Gallery on the Green, Lexington, MA, to Mrs. Molly Nye, Lexington, MA
TLF: "Pat, Lucas (age 6 mos.) and I had been in Naushon. ... On the way home, the launch ... passed very close to a small schooner yacht... At this moment ... came the disturbing idea that this is what a disastrous collision would look like... [The] vision nailed itself in my memory of imagination and The Passage was the outcome. I count it amongst the milestones on the way to what I call the “new” painting because it combines elements of precise design (the three portraits) with intuitive elements (embodied in the back view of the crouching girl)."
